Constraint-Regulated Cognition: A Unified Theory of AI Hallucination

AI hallucination — the generation of fluent yet factually false outputs — persists across all major architectures because current systems produce patterns without constraint validation. This research introduces the Constraint-Lattice Model, a substrate-neutral formal theory defining hallucination as output that fails to satisfy the intersection of four cognitive constraint classes: Perceptual, Logical, Empirical, and Social. Unlike existing mitigation techniques, this work offers an explanatory theory and a concrete solution: the 7-layer Constraint-Regulated Cognitive System (CRCS), which shifts AI from pure pattern generation to constraint-validated cognition. The conclusion is clear — hallucination cannot be eliminated, only constrained, detected, and corrected.
